Israeli military says 3 missiles fired at Israel from Syria
JERUSALEM.On Saturday, the Israeli military said three rockets were fired from Syria into Israel.It is a rare attack from the country’s northeastern neighbor after days of escalating violence on multiple fronts.
Missile launches that resulted in no damage or casualties have not been held liable.According to the Israeli military, only one rocket managed to cross Israeli territory and land in a field in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.The wreckage of another destroyed missile fell into Jordanian territory near the Syrian border, the Jordanian military said.
In Syria, an adviser to President Bashar al-Assad described the missile strikes as “part of a previous, present and ongoing response to a brutal enemy.”
In the occupied West Bank, Israeli security forces shot dead a 20-year-old Palestinian in the city of Azzun, Palestinian health officials said, sparking protests in the area.
The Israeli military said the soldiers opened fire on the Palestinians, throwing rocks and explosive devices.The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the slain Palestinian as Ayed Salim.
His death came at a time of unusually high levels of violence in the West Bank.More than 90 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire this year, according to the Associated Press, at least helped by those linked to militants.
Since then, 19 people have died in Palestinian attacks on Israelis, including two British Israelis who were shot dead near a settlement in the Jordan Valley on Friday, and an Italian tourist was killed by a suspected car ramming in Tel Aviv.All but one were civilians.
The rocket attacks from Syria come amid growing tensions between Israel and Palestine, sparked by an Israeli police raid on the most secret site in Jerusalem, the sacred complex that houses the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
This angered Palestinians celebrating the holy fasting month of Ramadan and prompted militants in Lebanon, as well as Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip, to bombard Israel with massive rocket fire.
In response, Israeli warplanes attacked targets believed to be linked to the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza and southern Lebanon.
Late Saturday evening, tensions in Jerusalem escalated as several hundred Palestinians barricaded themselves inside a mosque perched on a hilltop in the heart of Jerusalem’s Old City, sacred to both Muslims and Jews.Israeli police efforts to evict worshipers locked in a mosque overnight with a supply of firecrackers and stones erupted into riots at the sacred site earlier this week.
The latest escalation prompted Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallan to extend the entry ban to Israel for Palestinians from the occupied West Bank and Gaza during the Jewish holiday of Passover, while police stepped up forces in Jerusalem ahead of the sensitive religious holiday.celebrations
In another incident in the northern West Bank city of Nablus late Saturday night, the leader of a local independent armed group known as the Lion’s Den said the group had executed an alleged Israeli collaborator who had informed the Israeli military of the group’s whereabouts and movements.In recent months, Israeli security forces have targeted and killed several key members of the group.
The murder of the accused could not be immediately confirmed, but videos in the Palestinian media showed that medics and residents gathered around his bloody body in the Old City, dominated by the Lion’s Den.
“Traitors have no country, no people,” said Lion’s Den commander Odai Azizi.

More than 2,000 police officers are expected to be deployed to Jerusalem on Sunday, when tens of thousands of Jews are expected to gather at the Western Wall for a special priestly Easter blessing.The Wailing Wall is the holiest place where Jews can pray and is located next to the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex where large crowds of people gather every day to pray during Ramadan.
Jerusalem Police Chief Doron Turgeman met with his commanders on Saturday to assess security.He accused the Hamas militant group that rules the Gaza Strip of trying to provoke violence on the eve of the Sunday blessing of the priests with false claims that Jews were planning to storm the mosque.
“We will allow religious freedom and we will allow Muslims to come in for prayer,” he said, adding that the police “will act decisively and sensitively” to ensure that all faiths celebrate safely.
The current round of violence erupted earlier in the week after Israeli police raided the mosque, using tear gas and stun grenades to disperse hundreds of Palestinians barricaded inside.Scenes of violence during the raid sparked riots in the contested capital and outrage throughout the Arab world.

Obituary: Ben Ferenc, last living Nuremberg Nazi accuser, dies
Ben Ferenc, the last living Nuremberg prosecutor who tried the Nazis for the war crimes of genocide and was one of the first outside witnesses to document Nazi labor and concentration camp atrocities, has died.
He turned 103 in March.
Ferenc died Friday night in Boynton Beach, Florida, according to St.John’s University law professor John Barrett, who directs
blog about the Nuremberg Trials.The death was also confirmed by the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington.
“Today the world has lost a leader in seeking justice for the victims of genocide and related crimes,” the museum tweeted.
Born in Transylvania in 1920, Ferenc immigrated with his parents to New York as a very young boy to escape rampant anti-Semitism.After graduating from Harvard Law School, Ferenc joined the US Army just in time to take part in the Invasion of Normandy during World War II.Using his legal background, he became a Nazi war crimes investigator against US soldiers as part of the new War Crimes Unit.office of the judge-lawyer.

After the war, Ferenc was honorably discharged from the US Army and returned to New York to practice law.But it wasn’t long.Because of his experience as a war crimes investigator, he was recruited to help prosecute Nazi war criminals at the Nuremberg Trials, which began under US Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson.
Before leaving for Germany, he married his childhood sweetheart Gertrude.
At the age of 27, with no previous judicial experience, Ferenc became the lead prosecutor in a 1947 case in which 22 former commanders were charged with the murder of more than 1 million Jews, Gypsies and other enemies of the Third Reich in Eastern Europe.Instead of relying on witnesses, Ferenc mostly relied on official German documents to prove his case.All of the accused were convicted, and more than a dozen were sentenced to death by hanging, although Ferenc did not demand the death penalty.
“At the beginning of April 1948, when the long judgment was read out, I felt vindicated,” he wrote.“Our calls to protect humanity through the rule of law have been supported.”
As the war criminal trials drew to a close, Ferenc went to work for a consortium of Jewish charitable groups to help Holocaust survivors recover property, homes, businesses, art, Torah scrolls, and other Jewish religious objects that had been confiscated from them by the Nazis..Later, he also participated in the negotiations that led to compensation for the victims of Nazism.
In the following decades, Ferenc advocated the creation of an international court that could prosecute the leaders of any government for war crimes.These dreams came true in 2002 with the establishment of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, although its effectiveness was limited by the refusal of countries such as the United States to participate.
Ferenc was survived by a son and three daughters.His wife died in 2019.
