The Vasil hard fork, which was announced earlier this year, has generated a lot of excitement in the Cardano community.Despite some delays, Vasil, which is supposed to improve Cardano’s blockchain functionality, is on pace to go live this month.

T-Minus 4 Weeks to Vasil Mainnet Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK), the developers of the Cardano blockchain, announced on Monday that they had successfully launched the Vasil hard fork on the blockchain’s testnet. The much-anticipated hard fork is now live on the testnet, and a mainnet iteration is the only step left for it to transition from concept to reality.

We’re happy to report that today at 20:20 UTC the IOG team has successfully hard forked the #Cardano Testnet. This is an important next step in the journey towards the Vasil upgrade on mainnet.🧵

As part of their official announcement, IOHK is encouraging project developers, stake pool operators, and crypto exchanges to deploy their work on the Vasil testnet to ensure the smooth running of integrations when Vasil launches on the Cardano mainnet.

Earlier this year, IOHK touted Vasil as a necessary upgrade that would provide much faster block creation and improved scalability for decentralised applications (dapps) built on the Cardano blockchain.

In essence, Vasil was billed to be the most significant upgrade on Cardano since Alonzo – the hard fork that brought smart contracts to the blockchain back in September 2021.Besides just performance upgrades, IOHK explained in a Sunday tweet that Vasil would also provide reduced transaction costs and bolster script performance on the blockchain.

#Vasil improvements include higher throughput through diffusion pipelining to a better developer experience via much improved script performance & efficiency (plus lower costs).

At the same time, Vasil will ensure proper interoperability between sidechains on Cardano.IOHK is looking to fully deploy sidechains as part of the Cardano blockchain’s Basho development phase.

According to the development roadmap , Basho is Cardano’s fourth developmental phase, and it focuses more on optimising scaling functionalities. It will be followed by the Voltaire phase, which will focus more on blockchain governance through staking.

However, all eyes are on Vasil now. After the successful testnet launch, the mainet launch should take place in the next four weeks.By then, the developers should have prepared their resources.

In a blog post , Nigel Hemsley, IOHK’s head of delivery and project, noted that the core team had been close to finalising the hard fork. However, they discovered a few bugs that were still outstanding and would need some more work.Although none of the bugs was severe, IOHK was also exercising caution to ensure the success of the hard fork.

As a result, IOHK and the Cardano Foundation decided to defer the testnet launch until this month.

The successful testnet launch couldn’t come at a better time for investors looking to buy Cardano.ADA, the digital asset that powers the Cardano blockchain, has managed to hold its own against the broader market forces.

Although the asset had a 19.6% drop in the past month, the news of Vasil’s testnet launch has pushed ADA to a 3% jump in the past 4 hours alone.

Of course, investors would want to remain cautious about the digital asset , as the broader market pressure continues to build.
