Yet despite being an ardent Remainer the former Top Gear presenter once delivered a furious rant in which he warned that the EU will look to punish the UK to prevent other countries from leaving the bloc.

When asked if Brexit would change the perception of the UK globally, Mr Clarkson told Joe in 2019: “They laugh at us.

“They think it’s hilarious.

“And of course we will have to be seen to fail once we’re out if indeed we leave.

“We will have to be seen on a global stage, Europe will make damn sure we fail, and we fail badly and hard and visibly.

“[It would be] as a warning to the Catalonians and the Greeks and everyone else who might harbour ideas of leaving themselves.

“This is what happens if you leave.”

“But I think we will have to go through a period of harsh poverty.”

Despite the television presenter’s chilling assessment of how the EU hopes Brexit will pan out, Mr Clarkson remained optimistic that the UK would ultimately “survive”.

“There was an Irish fella who said to me the other day, he said ‘you lot are bulldogs, you’ll always survive’.

“I’d rather not go through a period of terrible disease and pestilence.

“Would you rather have disease and pestilence or not have it, I’d sort of go not.”
