One year after Brexit, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps unveiled a redesigned number plate.

On January 31, 2021, he tweeted: “After Covid lockdown, Brits will be able to drive on the Continent without GB stickers thanks to NEW reg plate with Union Flag and GB.

“Plus driving licences will NOT require International Driving Permits – all confirmed today on anniversary of leaving EU.”

The UN announced shortly after that the “GB” designation which had been in place for the past 111 years, is to be replaced.

It will instead feature the letters “UK” to include Northern Ireland.

The new “UK” sticker or magnet can be purchased online, in post offices, or in garages.

Drivers can also apply for a new UK number plate to comply with the latest changes.

A Halfords spokesperson said: “From 28th September, British motorists travelling abroad will be legally required to display a UK sticker on their vehicle, in place of the old GB one.

“Failure to adhere to the new regulations may lead to refusal on entry and holidays ruined.

“On hand to help ahead of the change come into force, Halfords are selling magnetic and non-magnetic stickers for £3.99 in-store and online.”

According to the Stoke Sentinel , drivers will need to display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of their vehicle.

Fuel shortages prompt ‘massive hike’ in searches for electric vehicles

This will be dependent on whether the number plate has a GB identifier with the Union Jack, a Euro symbol or a national flag of England, Scotland and Wales.

Drivers may also need to display a UK sticker if their number plate has numbers and letters only – with no flags or identifiers.

When driving in Spain, Cyprus or Malta, drivers must display a UK sticker no matter what is on the number plate.

This is just one of many number plate changes that have occurred this year, with the main change being to the plate itself.

The old version – ‘BS145d’ – has been replaced by a studier, more resilient ‘BS145e’.

The updated licence plates will be able to handle more damage, bending, abrasion, impact and thermal change.

They are also more helpful for the police, as they show up more clearly on number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras.

Additional changes include a ban on two tone number plates, with only solid black digits being allowed.

All plates will also have to show the suppliers business name and postcode in the bottom centre of the car registration plate.
