During his visit, the chief minister urged the people of the state to respect and protect the religious centers of all faiths and maintain communal harmony.

Channi held that “some inimical forces” could be behind the sacrilege incident since assembly elections are around the corner.The state is expected to go to polls early next year.

The CM said he was deeply hurt by the alleged sacrilege attempt, which was unfortunate and needed to be condemned.

If anyone has come with wrong intention, our intelligence agencies will try to nab and expose them, he said.

“We will go to the bottom of the incident,” he added.

A case was registered against the unidentified man late Saturday night under IPC sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and 307 (attempt to murder), Amritsar Police Commissioner Sukchain Singh Gill said on Sunday.

A special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to probe the case

The man was said to be in his mid-20s.

Gill said that footage obtained from all the cameras at the Golden Temple is being examined to collect information about the accused.

The footage shows that the accused entered the Golden Temple around 11 am on Saturday and slept for a few hours in front of the Akal Takht, the supreme temporal seat of the Sikhs, the police commissioner said.

The incident occurred after 6pm and he had spent several hours in the Golden Temple before committing the crime, he added.

The man jumped across the railings inside the sanctum sanctorum of the Golen Temple on Saturday evening, picked up the ceremonial sword and reached near the place where a Sikh priest was reciting the holy Guru Granth Sahib .

He was caught by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) task force members.

When he was being taken to the SGPC office, the angry “sangat” (congregation) thrashed him badly, which subsequently led to his death.

Randhawa said he had already spoken to the SGPC president and the Akal Takht Jathedar after the incident.

He said the man was yet to be identified.

“No mobile phone, no purse, no identity card or Aadhaar card was found from him.It has been established that he entered (the Golden Temple complex) around 11 am and remained there for a few hours until the incident,” the deputy chieff minister said.

Another lynching in Kapurthala

Less than 24 hours after the Golden Temple incident, another man was beaten to death in Kapurthala for “disrespecting” the Nishan Sahib (Sikh flag).

The man was beaten to death while he was in police custody.

Villagers and members of Sikh organisations clashed with the police personnel who tried to save the man.

Three cops including a station house officer were also injured in the scuffle.

Later talking to reporters, Inspector General of police Gurinder Singh Dhillon said there is no visible event of sacrilege at the gurdwara.

“Everything was found intact including the holy Guru Granth Sahib,” he stated.
