The yield on the US 10-year Treasury note fell more than 10bps to 4.66% on Thursday, the lowest in nearly two weeks, and moving further away from 2007-highs of 5% touched in late October, as traders digest the latest Fed monetary policy decision and a lower-than-expected increase in Treasury’s borrowing needs. The Fed held the funds rate unchanged at 5.5% on November 1st as expected, but noticed that the recent increase in yields has had a tightening impact on financial conditions, and hinted it is done with rate hikes. Also, the Treasury Department announced it would sell $112 billion in longer-duration notes and bonds, less than expectations of a larger $114 billion, as soaring yields for longer-term debt discourage the US government from issuing a larger amount of 10-year and 30-year instruments in favor of shorter-term bills. The Treasury also said it now expects just a single additional step up in quarterly issuance.
