A rare discovery of dinosaur remains preserved with its last meal – Tech Explorist

Determining the diet of non-avialan dinosaurs is problematic owing to the often sparse and non-specific nature of the data available in the fossil record. This is because animals consumed by carnivores, either partially or entirely, were likely to be involved in a process limiting their preservation potential.

A new study by

McGill University describes the remains of a small fossil mammal foot preserved inside the body cavity of the holotype specimen of the small feathered dinosaur Microraptor zhaoianus.Microraptor preyed on fish, birds, lizards, and now small mammals as opportunistic predators. The discovery of a rare fossil suggests the animal was a generalist carnivore in prehistoric dinosaur ecology.

Of the hundreds of carnivorous

dinosaur skeletons, only 20 cases preserve their last meals. This new find makes 21.

McGill University Professor Hans Larsson said, “At first, I couldn’t believe it.There was a tiny rodent-like mammal foot about a centimeter long perfectly preserved inside a Microraptor skeleton. These finds are the only solid evidence we have about the food consumption of these long-extinct animals – and they are exceptionally rare.”

Microraptor was fully feathered with wings on both its arms and legs.About the size of a crow and one of the smallest

dinosaurs, the dinosaur is closely linked to the origin of birds.

Larsson

said, “We already know of Microraptor specimens preserved with parts of fish, a bird, and a lizard in their bellies.

This new find adds a small mammal to their diet, suggesting these dinosaurs were opportunistic and not picky eaters.”

“Knowing they were not specialized to any particular food is a big deal; this could be the first evidence of a generalist carnivore in dinosaur ecosystems.Generalist predators are important stabilizers in today’s ecosystems, like foxes and crows, because they can feed among several species that may have differing population abundances.”

“Knowing that Microraptor was a generalist carnivore puts a new perspective on how ancient ecosystems may have worked and a possible insight into the success of these small, feathered dinosaurs.”

Redmi will launch Watch 3, Band 2, Buds 4 Lite, and new Note 12 Pro Speed on Dec 27 – GSMArena.com news – GSMArena.com

Xiaomi’s brand Redmi which operates semi-independently in China, is preparing for its huge event tomorrow. The flagship smartphone series Redmi K60 is arriving, and we know it will have at least two very different looks – one with a Blue vegan leather back and another designed to look like carbon.

We are also expecting a flurry of new devices, including two new wearables – Redmi Watch 3 and Redmi Band 2 – as well as new TWS earphones Redmi Buds 4 Lite.

On top of that, we also expect an entirely new Redmi Note 12 Pro Speed smartphone that brings a new chipset, camera and looks with a fancy Mint Green color.

Redmi K60 in Carbon Black, Blue Vegan Leather

The Redmi K60 will have a so-called 2K screen, which is 1220p – the middle step between QHD and Full HD.The Xiaomi brand developed an AI algorithm that learns how to provide the best auto brightness with time.

Images also reveal the panel will be flat, but we don’t know whether this applies to the Redmi K60, the Redmi K60 Pro, or any other phone lined up for an announcement.

There is also a Sony IMX800 sensor in one (or more) of these phones. It is a 50 MP camera, often spotted in premium-tier devices, and this one will be coupled with OIS.

The Redmi Watch 3 is coming with a 1.75” AMOLED screen, which is almost 15% bigger than the predecessor, and it will have 341 ppi and 600 nits brightness. We can see a single button on the right side, and a teaser revealed a bright green strap option.

Redmi Band 2 brings a 1.47” display with a touch area 76% more than the first Redmi Band. The body is 9.99 mm and will have no physical keys whatsoever. Then there is the Redmi Buds 4 Lite, also translated as Youth, in Green and Orange to match the style of its young users. Each bud will weigh just 3.9 grams.

Redmi Watch 3 • Redmi Band 2 • Redmi Buds 4 Lite

The Redmi Note 12 Pro Speed was not mentioned by the company; it was leaked by WHYLAB on Weibo. The new phone will keep the overall design with three cameras on a rectangular island and flat sides, but the Redmi logo makes its way to the top of the back panel.

The phone is expected to keep the overall footprint of the Redmi 12 Pro series but will replace the Dimensity 1080 with a Snapdragon 778G chipset.

The 108 MP is also expected to be gone for a 50 MP Sony IMX766 sensor. It is expected to be priced under CNY1,699, which is the current cost of a regular Redmi Note 12 Pro.

Bitcoin exchange withdrawals sink to 7-month low as users forget FTX – Cointelegraph

Bitcoin (

BTC) exchange users have forgotten all about the FTX scandal this Christmas, data shows.

According to on-chain analytics firm

Glassnode, exchange outflows have now hit their lowest levels in over six months.

Still not your keys, still not your coins?

As Bitcoin volatility sets a new record low in what is being

called “Do Nothing December,” exchange users’ habits are also rapidly adjusting to the current climate.

After seeing an overwhelming surge in light of the FTX meltdown, BTC withdrawals from exchange wallets have entirely reversed the spike which began around six weeks ago.

Having hit a peak of 142,788 BTC on Nov.14, outflows from the trading platforms tracked by Glassnode have declined over ten times.

On Dec.

25, the latest date for which numbers are available, total exchange outflows came in at just 9,352 BTC — a drop of 93.5%.

More than that, the last time that outflows were so low on a daily basis was seven months ago in May.

As Cointelegraph

reported, in the immediate aftermath of FTX, exchange reserves declined by over $3 billion in a single week.

Exchanges’ BTC balance stood at 2.252 million BTC on Christmas Day, a drop of nearly 21% versus the 2022 peak of 2.845 million BTC from January.

BTC supply increasingly stationary

Record low volatility is meanwhile showing in on-chain data, with hodlers reluctant or in little need of moving coins.

Glassnode

confirms that unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs) with a lifespan of between one week and one month have fallen to their lowest numbers in 15 months.

The popular

HODL Waves metric, which groups UTXOs by age, shows a rise in coins which last moved 1-2 years ago over the course of December.

These now account for over 20% of the total BTC supply.

South Korea’s SK Group may sell some Southeast Asia assets – Reuters

SEOUL, Dec 26 (Reuters) – South Korea’s second-largest conglomerate SK Group

(034730.KS) is considering selling some of its assets in Southeast Asia and reinvesting in other businesses in countries in the region, including Vietnam, a South Korean newspaper reported.

“We are considering some asset adjustments as part of regular changes to our portfolio from time to time, but nothing has been confirmed yet,” an SK official said.

“Even if some assets are adjusted, we will use it to reinvest in other growth areas in Vietnam,” the official said.

Vietnam, where Samsung Electronics makes half of its global smartphone output, and South Korea earlier this month upgraded their relations to “comprehensive strategic partnership”, which Vietnam has so far established only with China, Russia and India.

The conglomerate plans to decide which assets to potentially sell depending on buyers’ offers, and is considering reinvesting some of the proceeds from any stake sales in local firms, South Korean newspaper the Korea Economic Daily reported on Sunday citing unnamed investment banking sources.

An industry source, however, said SK Group was planning to expand its team in Vietnam despite preliminary talks with a buyer to sell some of its assets there.

Via an investment vehicle, the Korean company is the fourth largest investor in Vingroup, Vietnam’s largest conglomerate, according to Refinitiv.

Its combined investment in Vingroup and Masan Group, Vietnam’s second largest conglomerate, is worth over $1 billion.

Shares of Vingroup closed down 4% and of Masan down 3.7% on Monday.

A Vingroup spokesperson said on Monday that SK Group had no intention of selling Vingroup shares.

“We have discussed with SK Group,” the spokesperson said.“SK will plan on continuing investments and collaborating with partners in Vietnam to grow up investments.”

Masan did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Assets held by SK Group’s Southeast Asia investment firm that could be sold, according to the paper, also include stakes in Vietnam’s retail pharmacy chain Pharmacity, retailer VinCommerce and consumer retail platform The Crown X.

It also has a stake in Malaysian fintech company Big Pay, the paper said.
