imageNEW DELHI: Industrialist Rahul Bajaj passed away at the age of 83 on Saturday.He breathed his last around 2.30pm.

His last rites will be performed at Pune’s Vaikunth Crematorium on Sunday.Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said Rahul Bajaj will be accorded a state funeral.

Bajaj is survived by sons, Rajiv and Sanjiv Bajaj, and daughter Sunaina Kejriwal.

Rahul Bajaj was the chairman of Bajaj group, best known for motorcycle maker Bajaj Auto and financial services arm, Bajaj Finserv .He stepped down as the non-executive chairman of Bajaj Auto in April 2021.

After taking charge of the Bajaj group business in 1965, Rahul Bajaj led it to the growth path.

Under his stewardship, flagship firm Bajaj Auto saw its turnover growing to Rs 12,000 crore from just Rs 7.2 crore .

Bajaj was elected to Rajya Sabha in June 2006 and remained a member till 2010.

He was also a former chairman of the International Business Council, World Economic Forum and a former member of the South Asia advisory board of Harvard Business School.

Rahul Bajaj stepped down from his position of non-executive director and chairman of Bajaj Auto on April 30 last year.

Rahul Bajaj was a former member of the International Advisory Council of the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC.

The industrialist spearheaded the CSR activities of the Bajaj Group of companies and charitable trusts including Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation.

Bajaj was recipient of many awards, including the Padma Bhushan and honorary doctorates from many universities.
