They said that “due to the growing scepticism of voters towards the EU, many member states are struggling with political instability at home”.

The five European experts, who published their piece in 2017, detailed how there was a “growing friction” with member states of what was deemed “incompatible goals” demanded by the EU.

The veteran commander, who spent 29-years in the British Army, told Express.co.uk : “AUKUS shows that Britain is no longer tied to stilted and timid EU foreign policies.

The changes are coming into force from Tuesday and will crequire motorists to make changes to their number plate.

Before Brexit, British number plates featured a circle of EU stars with the letters “GB” underneath, enabling people to travel and drive abroad.

The “GB”, designation which had been in place for the past 111 years, is being replaced, and will instead feature the letters “UK” to include Northern Ireland.

The new sticker or magnet can be purchased online, in post offices, or in garages.

Drivers can also apply for a new UK number plate to comply with the latest changes.

18 hours ago 16:55 Paul Withers Lord Adonis savaged as he weighs in on petrol shortages Lord Andrew Adonis has faced a huge backlash from social media users who have lashed out at the Labour peer over his attempts to blame Brexit for the lorry driver shortages sweeping throughout the UK.

Speaking to LBC, he said: “The big change, as the Road Haulage Association has highlighted, has been Brexit.

“Exacerbated, of course, by the Covid crisis which meant that many drivers returned [home].

“You need to understand the interaction between the two.

It’s undoubtedly true that a lot of drivers left the country because of Covid, that’s absolutely right because a lot of people went back to their homelands, and we had a huge number of EU drivers.

“But they haven’t returned, this is the point. And they haven’t returned because the Brexit red tape makes it hard to, it means all the time they have to spend to get through the red tape at the border makes it less economic to come.

“But also, their employment status is in jeopardy and it means they no longer have a right to come back into the country in the way they did before when there was a single market.”

But the assessment from Lord Adonis came under attack from listeners ho took to social media to dismantle his argument about Brexit causing the shortages the UK is experiencing.

On Friday, protesters gathered as they tried to vent their fury against plans for the wind proposals.

The demonstrations took place in Le Havre and Cherbourg, with the group made up predominantly of fishermen.

They claim the win project plans are an ecological disaster, having an impact on both marine biodiversity and their economic activity.

One protester told Europe 1: “They are going to kill everything. They are going to kill an artisanal industry. It’s catastrophic.

“Castex and Macron should go and see the extraordinary damage they cause.”

Anne McLaughlin, the SNP’s Shadow Immigration spokesperson, said: ” The Prime Minister and senior Tory ministers were repeatedly warned about the damaging consequences of their extreme Brexit plans, including over the threat of staff shortages.

“Despite those warnings, the Tories recklessly ploughed ahead.

“The reality is that Brexit has been an unmitigated disaster – with households and businesses being forced to pay a heavy price.”

Tony Danker told BBC Breakfast: “We had several drivers go home that we wouldn’t have wanted to go home and I think there is this bigger question of the immigration system, and it’s a complicated one.”

He continued: “Essentially the Government said ‘look, post-Brexit, let’s have an immigration system that only lets in the skills we need, not the skills we don’t’.

“Well, I think what we’re realising is there are some skills we need in the short run, we need to bring them in (but) not forever.”

Edmund King said the problem should pass in a matter of days if drivers just stick to filling up when they need it, adding “there is plenty of fuel at source”.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Mr King said shortage of lorry drivers had only been a “localised problem” earlier in the week.

yesterday 09:54 Paul Withers Macron’s team issue final ultimatum in tense Channel fishing dispute France has issued a final ultimatum to the UK and Jersey ahead of a crucial deadline on access for fishing vessels in the English Channel.

An amnesty period allowing French vessels unfettered access to Jersey waters is due to expire on Thursday, September 30.

With four days to go before the deadline, French ministers last night accused the British of not respecting their commitments on fishing as part of the Brexit agreement.

The French Ministry of the Sea has requested 169 definitive licences for access to Jersey waters for French fishermen, instead of interim permits.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has warned that disruption to festive preparations will be “inevitable” if progress is not made to solve the shortfall of around 90,000 lorry drivers.

yesterday 08:02 Richard Percival Stopping benefits to EU citizens without settled status ‘unnecessary’, says SNP Halting benefit payments to European citizens living in the UK who have not yet applied for settled status is “unnecessary” and could force some into homelessness, the Work and Pensions Secretary has been told.

Jenny Gilruth, Europe minister with the Scottish Government, raised her concerns about the move in a letter to Therese Coffey.

After the UK left the European Union, EU nationals were given until June 30 to apply for settled status – with this giving them the right to live, work and study in Britain, as well as use the NHS and receive any benefits they might be eligible for.

Ms Gilruth said that after the deadline for applying to the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) had passed, the Department for Work and Pensions continued to make social security payments to EU citizens who had not done so.

But, in a letter to the Work and Pensions Secretary, she said she understood that the UK Government is “suspending these payments at the end of September and discontinue them completely from the end of October”.
