A modification to the policy and procedure of the College’s Flexible Work Arrangements policy (32500) is being considered at this time. The College community is invited to review the proposed changes and provide feedback by visiting the P&P webpage, where such proposals are posted from time to time (scroll to the bottom).Feedback must be submitted by close of business on Friday, December 1, 2023.

32500-Flexible Work Arrangements (changes proposed to the Policy and the Procedure)

Background

The College introduced the Flexible Work Arrangements Policy in 2001.At that time, the focus was on teleworking.

The policy has since been modified three times and the procedure has been modified five times, always in an effort to best serve the needs of the institution and employees.During the pandemic, the policy was updated once, and the procedure was updated twice.

Proposed changes

The changes proposed are based on lessons we have learned from operations through and after the pandemic. Some changes are minor, for example, updating of terms.Other changes introduce more flexibility with regard to how we implement our flexible work arrangements.

Your Feedback

Your feedback will be reviewed by the President’s Cabinet and others, and then final changes will be recommended to the president.Recall that changes in policy are taken to the Board of Trustees for its consideration.

By Liz Feldman on Behalf of the Part-Time Faculty Institute

Inflation, high interest rates, the threat of a recession, these are some of the economic issues people are facing these days. Therefore, understanding how to manage your money can be an important skill. It is a subject part-time faculty member Bob Carroll knows all too well.

He teaches a Personal Finance class through the Business, Economics, Accounting, Computer Applications, Hospitality Management, and Paralegal Studies Department (BEACAHMPS).He joined the College in 2013 and has usually taught at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus. He also has previously taught Introduction to Business, Stat for Business & Economics, and Principles of Management.

He worked in the finance industry for decades and he is now retired. The focus of his job was to manage a portfolio for a mortgage company. He said he mostly dealt with mortgage backed securities and hedges, a strategy used to limit financial risks.

Carroll was a math major when he was an undergraduate at Villanova University. He received his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania and he became interested in finance while talking with his classmates. His first job was in finance when he finished his education.

“The economy, the stock and bond markets are endlessly interesting once you get familiar with them,” Carroll explained.

He is now sharing his knowledge with his students.Carroll is no stranger to the classroom.

“I taught as a graduate student and thought I had something to offer,” Carroll said.

He hopes students will learn some important lessons after they take his course.

He said he especially hopes students will understand how to manage their money through the financial ups and downs.

“The world keeps changing. There is always something new to discuss and learn.

The biggest lesson is there will be many shocks to the economy.Saving builds resilience to the shocks,” Carroll said.

He said he learns as much from his students as they learn from him.

“The best moments are when someone asks a question or offers an experience that gives me a new insight. Some students use the Robinhood app, which is a stock broker app, while others trade crypto currencies,” Carroll said.

The College has recognized Carroll’s efforts in the classroom. It presented him with an Outstanding Part-Time Faculty award one year for his work with OER’s (open educational resources). He was one of the first part-time faculty members in the Business Department to embrace OER’s and has been involved with the OER community on a national level.Years ago, he wanted to learn more about OER’s and so he visited Tidewater Community College to get a better understanding of this alternative classroom tool.

He then introduced the concept of OER’s to his department.

“The College’s commitment to OER’s has been the right choice in my experience,” Carroll said.He further explained students were not very happy the last time he used a regular textbook in his course, so he prefers using OER’s.

Like many other professors, Carroll taught during the pandemic. The spring of 2020 was challenging because the College switched from teaching in-person to online during the middle of the semester.

“It was a difficult transition even though I had already taught online.I found students choose in-person courses for a reason.

They learn better surrounded by their peers,” Carroll said.

While Carroll faces some challenges in the classroom especially when some students do not engage in his course, he said overall he has received positive reviews from his students.

Carroll currently lives in Virginia with his wife Robin, and he has two grown children.

The College’s Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) Campus Center has added a second Racial Healing Circle for the month of November. To learn more and register, please visit the TRHT Campus Center webpage.

  • Racial Healing Circle, Wednesday, November 8, 2023, 12 noon – 2 p.m., Rockville Campus, SV 416, facilitated by Jacquelyn Williams and Glenda Hernandez Tittle
  • Racial Healing Circle, Monday, November 20, 2023, 9:30 to 11 a.m., Germantown Campus, BE 160, facilitated by Ken Nelson and Stacey Gustavson

What to expect from a Racial Healing Circle:

A group of 10-20 diverse individuals from the College will meet for one and a half to two hours to go through a series of activities that help us get to know each other better.

The idea is that if we know each other better as individuals, we break down the hierarchy of who is important and who is not (hierarchy of human value).By knowing each other better, we are better positioned to tackle the important policies, practices, and narratives that are barriers to fulfilling the mission of the College.

About the MC TRHT Campus Center:

Montgomery College is one of more than 70 higher education institutions across the country with a Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) Campus Center, which is an initiative of the American Association of Colleges & Universities (AAC&U).MC’s TRHT Campus Center aims to provide community healing activities that promote narrative change in order to dismantle the belief in a hierarchy of human values and to prepare the next generation of leaders to advocate for racial and social justice.MC’s TRHT Campus Center was launched in 2021 with generous support from AAC&U and the Meyer Foundation.

Careers in Criminal Justice Day will be held on Wednesday, November 8, from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m.

in the Theatre Arts Arena on the Rockville Campus, hosted by the Criminal Justice Discipline and Student Employment Services.

More than 25 organizations in Law Enforcement, Justice, Corrections and Rehabilitation, and Victims’ Rights will be present in-person.Stay tuned for more information as the date approaches. This is a great event to attend if you think you might be interested in the major as well!

Register in advance to take advantage of all that the Jobs Connected website offers to prepare for the fair!

Advantages of Jobs Connected for Jobseekers

  • Before/during/After the actual in-person event, you can visit the website and, in each employer’s information booth you will find:
    • An “About” page where you can read a basic description of the employer, watch videos they have embedded, access a link to their website, learn about the size of the organization and the benefits they offer, and perhaps find direct contact information. No more walking up to a table and asking, “what does your company do?” – you’ll already know!
    • An “Open Positions” page with links to and descriptions of what they are hiring for.
    • A “Handouts” page for full job descriptions, brochures, and other documents.
    • A “Q&A” page where you can ask questions anonymously about their jobs and requirements and the employer culture.
    • A “Resume Dropbox” where you can upload your resume for the employer to see and perhaps even contact you before the actual event. You also won’t “run out of resumes” on the day of the event because you can upload a virtual one to their resume drop box.
  • You can easily “do your research” about employers BEFORE the actual event, so you can plan you actions and strategize to visit the employers you are MOST interested in efficiently at the event.
  • When you visit a table at the event, there will be a QR code on the employer’s table sign – if you scan that with your phone, the employer will be able to see your name and email address so they can follow up with jobseekers that visited the booth after the fair.No more lost business card/lost resume dead-ends.

Many people are familiar with the mission of their local Chamber of Commerce to promote and advocate on behalf of local businesses. What may not be known is that some Montgomery County Chambers have posed a challenge to see which of them can raise the most scholarship support for Montgomery College students.

When Paula Ross, CEO of the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce, was thinking about new ways to energize member support, she put out a call to her fellow chamber leaders and challenged them to join her in raising scholarship funds for Montgomery College.

Three area chambers agreed to a friendly competition and from there a challenge was launched to see who can raise the most scholarship funds in a six-week period. The participating chambers include Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce, Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce, and Greater Bethesda Chamber of Commerce.

When asked why the Chambers got involved in this campaign, Allie Williams, president and CEO of the Greater Bethesda Chamber of Commerce, noted, “as business leaders in Montgomery County, we care deeply about education and economic development and feel it’s important to support students locally so that they earn the skills they need to join the workforce in our area.” Stephanie Helsing, president and CEO of the Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce, added, “the Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce is excited about this challenge to promote the excellence of and importance of Montgomery College in our community.Workforce development is a huge issue for the business community at large and this friendly challenge is a way for them to actively contribute to this valuable pipeline.I love that this is a competition with a cause!”

The challenge began with a launch event on Tuesday, September 26, where Joshua Hayes and Esmerelda Quenum, the two students on the Montgomery College Foundation Board of Directors, welcomed and thanked local business leaders for participating in this campaign.

They also shared information about their student experience and the need for donor scholarship support. The challenge ends on October 31, 2023.
