Zwingmann said he recently asked ChatGPT to explain the mechanisms and workings of a machine learning technology known as a DBSCAN, which is short for density-based spatial clustering of noisy applications, because he is too “lazy to write everything down”.
“I went up and said, ‘OK, tell me step by step in detail how the DBSCAN algorithm works,’ and it gave me that step by step,” Zwingmann said.After a bit of polishing and editing, Zwingmann said the lecture notes were in good shape.“This took me about 30 minutes, and it would have taken me all day,” said Zwingmann.“I can’t ignore the fact that this has proven immensely helpful.” ChatGPT debuted at the end of November and has quickly become a viral sensation, with people tweeting questions like “Are NFTs dead” and requests like “Tell a funny joke about the tax risks of international remote work.” They include a screenshot of ChatGPT’s response, which often – but not always – makes sense.The technology was developed by San Francisco-based OpenAI, a research firm led by Sam Altman and supported by Microsoft, co-founder of LinkedIn Reid Hoffman and Khosla Ventures.
ChatGPT automatically generates text from written prompts in a way that is far more sophisticated and creative than the chatbots of Silicon Valley’s past.In a year that has turned into a dud for the technology sector, with massive layoffs, devastated stock prices and crypto disasters dominating the headlines, ChatGPT is a reminder that innovation is still happening.
Tech executives and venture capitalists have gobbled it up on Twitter, some even to compare it on Apples debut of the iPhone in 2007.Five days after OpenAI released ChatGPT, Altman said that the chat research tool has “exceeded 1 million users!” In 2016, tech giants love Facebook, Google and Microsoft trumpeted digital assistants as the next evolution of human and computer interaction.They bragged about the potential to order chatbots Uber rides, buy airline tickets and answer real-life questions.Six years later, progress is slow.
The majority of chatbots people interact with are still relatively primitive, capable only of answering rudimentary questions on company help desk pages or, at a minimum, helping frustrated customers understand why their cable bills are so high.But with early ChatGPT adopters demonstrating the technology’s ability to hold a conversation through multiple queries in addition to software code generation, the world of so-called natural language processing appears to be entering a new phase.Learn more about technology and crypto from CNBC Pro It’s part of the larger trend.Tech investors are pouring billions of dollars into startups that specialize in generative AI, which refers to the ability of computers to automatically create text, videos, photos and other media using advanced machine learning technologies.
Brendan Burke, an analyst at data firm PitchBook, says a number of early-stage investors have shifted their focus from cryptocurrencies and related concepts such as web3 to generative AI technologies.“That’s a trend that is observable,” Burke said.According to PitchBook, Khosla, David Sacks’ Craft Ventures, Sequoia, UK Entrepreneur First, and Lux Capital are the top companies in the space.Investors have also noticed on platforms like GitHub that many web3 developers have shifted their focus from NFTs and crypto projects to open-source generative AI initiatives, Burke said.
“I think this is a sign of some of the rethinking going on in the early market,” Burke said.
What is ChatGPT? ChatGPT is essentially a variant of OpenAI’s popular GPT-3.5 language generation software designed for having conversations with people.Some of its functions include answering follow-up questions, challenging incorrect assumptions, rejecting inappropriate questions, and even admitting its mistakes, according to an OpenAI summary of the language model.ChatGPT is trained on a huge amount of text data.It learned to recognize patterns that allow it to produce its own text that mimics different writing styles, said Bern Elliot, a vice president at Gartner.OpenAI doesn’t reveal what exact data was used to train ChatGPT, but the company says it generally searched the web, archived books and Wikipedia.
OpenAI declined to comment on this story.Elliot said ChatGPT is, for now, more of a way for OpenAI to get publicity and show what’s possible for large language models, as opposed to a nifty piece of software that companies can integrate.
While ChatGPT is free, OpenAI sells access to the underlying language and related AI models for companies to use.“ChatGPT, as it is currently understood, is a parlor trick,” Elliot said.“It’s something that by itself isn’t going to fix what people need, unless what they need is some sort of distraction.” However, Zwingmann is not alone in using ChatGPT for more advanced purposes.Cai GoGwilt, the chief technology officer of digital contract management startup Ironclad, said his company is exploring how ChatGPT can be used to summarize changes in legal documents.The feature would be helpful to the startup’s legal clients, who routinely change documents and then notify their colleagues after making the changes, GoGwilt said.GoGwilt said ChatGPT offers “more creative” responses compared to similar language models developed by major tech companies.Meta’s AI language tool, called RoBERTa, appears to be more capable of categorizing and labeling text, GoGwilt said, adding that his company uses both GPT and RoBERTa to power certain functions in its digital document software.At legal research and data firm LexisNexis, Min Chen, a vice president, said in an email that she and her team are just beginning to test ChatGPT, even though they already use OpenAI’s GPT-3 software through the Azure cloud of Microsoft.
Chen said GPT-3 is more suitable for LexisNexis because it is a corporate product and can be customized.However, her team has been experimenting with ChatGPT and she said it sometimes produces “sensible answers” that are “very impressive.” Yet it has its flaws.“I’m afraid it’s not reliable enough as a decision-making tool for serious legal research,” said Min.“In some cases, ChatGPT gives a very comprehensive answer that seems logical, but the answer is not that the facts are correct.” There’s also the bias problem, which applies to many types of AI-powered software.As Mozilla senior fellow Abeba Birhane shared on Twitter, ChatGPT produced lyrics suggesting that women wearing lab coats “probably are only there to clean the floor”, while men wearing lab coats “probably have the knowledge and skills you’re looking for”.
Regarding ChatGPT’s limitations, OpenAI said in a blog post that while the company is working to reduce bias, the software “sometimes responds to malicious instructions or exhibits biased behavior.” Altman said in a tweet this weekend that ChatGPT is “incredibly limited” and “relying on it for anything important right now is a mistake.” Krishna Gade, CEO of AI model monitoring startup Fiddler, said ChatGPT and related language technologies could lead to major “disruptions to web search,” an area long dominated by Google.Gade, who previously worked at Microsoft’s Bing search unit, said that if ChatGPT’s popularity continues to grow along with other chat-based tools that answer questions, Google may need to update its core search technology to focus more prominently on chat.The rising popularity of ChatGPT shows that there is a segment of the population that prefers information through question and answer rather than a typical search.
Google parent Alphabet has plenty of AI talent and has helped develop some of the key AI technologies used to create systems like ChatGPT.The search engine is also a habit that is very hard to displace.
