The Kingston District was discovered in 1863 and the major commodities produced from the district were gold, silver, lead and copper.The nearest town from the claim is Kingston, which is a very small town that has a saloon and a general store.Other nearby towns include Carvers & Austin.Austin is approx.31 miles away and Carvers is approx.36 miles.
Both of these towns contain fuel, hotels, auto parts, tire shops and more.
Both towns are neat little mining towns with friendly people.Now let’s talk about the mine.The Bow Mine is nestled in a great secluded spot in a small canyon that has good access for 2 wheel drive vehicles, travel trailers and rv’s.There is only 2 miles of dirt road off pavement before reaching the claim.At the campsite is numerous willows and vegetation indicating the presence of water.
On most years unlike drought years this little drainage probably would run some year round water.If you dug a hole up higher in the drainage I’m sure you could get enough water to gravity feed a tank or trailer, probably enough to run a small mining operation as well.
From the campsite the adits are a short 200 foot hike.You could easily make a road to the main adit without much work as an old road exist just needs to be cleaned up a bit.Off Highway 376 is a wire gate that you can lock behind you for privacy and piece of mind.The main adit has approx.
233 feet of underground workings including 2 large stopes and several crosscuts.Large stopes are a good indicator that valuable large pockets of ore existed during mining operations in the 1900’s.Thick veins are 5-10 feet thick and the main tunnel still shows a good amount of ore on the hanging wall.We sampled 200 lbs of ore from the tailing piles and inside the main adit.The table showed a good amount of that pretty yellow gold and silver.Tailings in front of the mine look really good and we estimate around 1000 tons of ore.

The site of Kingston, at a flat area at the mouth of Kingston Canyon, was much suitable for a town than Bunker Hill.Kingston became the primary camp for the mines in the area as Bunker Hill died out.In 1865 a post office was established in Kingston and the 20-stamp Sterling Mill was built.Several other mills were built in 1866, making Kingston the milling center for all the mines in the area.
The mines declined in just a few years and by 1869 the mills were silent and the Kingston post office closed.In 1881 new mining activity in Kingston Canyon resulted in a rebirth of the town but this time it was known as Morgan.The Morgan post office opened in November of 1881.Morgan didn’t last much longer than Kingston did the first time around.
Several businesses returned to town and a school opened in 1885, but another decline in the mining industry resulted in the post office closing again that year.Kingston would get one more lease on life in 1906 as once again the mines became active.The Kingston post office would return in 1907 (named Kingston again).The mines remained active until 1911 when the Kingston Canyon mining industry finally shut down for good.
Kingston never completely died out.The school operated until 1923.Today Kingston is a rural populated place with around 100 residents.Little remains of historic Kingston other than the stone walls of the Sterling Mill.
