23

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was launched on December 25, 2021, and commissioning was completed in early July 2022.Since then it has been producing magnificent images of galaxies, active galactic nuclei, star-forming regions, and planets.

On Monday, October 23, at 2 pm in Globe Hall, Dr.John C.Mather, the recipient of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics, will deliver a presentation called, “Opening the Infrared Treasure Chest with the James Webb Space Telescope,” and show how he and his team built the Webb and explain what they hope to find.

Though Dr.Mather’s prize-winning research provided crucial evidence for the Big Bang theory and significantly advanced our understanding of the universe’s origin and evolution, this presentation is intended for a general audience. The event is free and open to the public, and a light reception will follow the talk.

Come and be inspired by one who has been recognized for providing “the greatest benefit to humankind.”

See the Nobel Laureate Speaker Series webpage for more information.

General Education Recertification Process

Faculty (the proposer) must request an extension of General Education status every six years as part of the assessment process. The proposer should first contact the appropriate department chair and dean for initial approval, then confirm course transferability by following the transfer review process set forth by the transfer director. The proposer will then work with a General Education campus advisory person (CAP), who will assist in proposal development and progression through the approval process.

The General Education course recertification process is managed in Curriculog, the College’s curriculum action application. After discipline approval and allowing an opportunity for comment from the MC community, the General Education Standing Committee (GESC) will make a recommendation to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, who makes the final decision.

Upon final approval of General Education status, the curriculum specialist will make approved edits to the College catalog.

CAP Contact Information

A General Education committee CAP is assigned to each course recertification. The CAPs below can be reached at their MC email or the emails below:

By Liz Feldman on Behalf of the Part-Time Faculty Institute

Inflation, high interest rates, the threat of a recession, these are some of the economic issues people are facing these days. Therefore, understanding how to manage your money can be an important skill. It is a subject part-time faculty member Bob Carroll knows all too well.He teaches a Personal Finance class through the Business, Economics, Accounting, Computer Applications, Hospitality Management, and Paralegal Studies Department (BEACAHMPS).

He joined the College in 2013 and has usually taught at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus. He also has previously taught Introduction to Business, Stat for Business & Economics, and Principles of Management.

He worked in the finance industry for decades and he is now retired.

The focus of his job was to manage a portfolio for a mortgage company. He said he mostly dealt with mortgage backed securities and hedges, a strategy used to limit financial risks.

Carroll was a math major when he was an undergraduate at Villanova University. He received his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania and he became interested in finance while talking with his classmates. His first job was in finance when he finished his education.

“The economy, the stock and bond markets are endlessly interesting once you get familiar with them,” Carroll explained.

He is now sharing his knowledge with his students.Carroll is no stranger to the classroom.

“I taught as a graduate student and thought I had something to offer,” Carroll said.

He hopes students will learn some important lessons after they take his course.

He said he especially hopes students will understand how to manage their money through the financial ups and downs.

“The world keeps changing.

There is always something new to discuss and learn. The biggest lesson is there will be many shocks to the economy.Saving builds resilience to the shocks,” Carroll said.

He said he learns as much from his students as they learn from him.

“The best moments are when someone asks a question or offers an experience that gives me a new insight. Some students use the Robinhood app, which is a stock broker app, while others trade crypto currencies,” Carroll said.

The College has recognized Carroll’s efforts in the classroom. It presented him with an Outstanding Part-Time Faculty award one year for his work with OER’s (open educational resources). He was one of the first part-time faculty members in the Business Department to embrace OER’s and has been involved with the OER community on a national level.

Years ago, he wanted to learn more about OER’s and so he visited Tidewater Community College to get a better understanding of this alternative classroom tool.He then introduced the concept of OER’s to his department.

“The College’s commitment to OER’s has been the right choice in my experience,” Carroll said.

He further explained students were not very happy the last time he used a regular textbook in his course, so he prefers using OER’s.

Like many other professors, Carroll taught during the pandemic. The spring of 2020 was challenging because the College switched from teaching in-person to online during the middle of the semester.

“It was a difficult transition even though I had already taught online.I found students choose in-person courses for a reason. They learn better surrounded by their peers,” Carroll said.

While Carroll faces some challenges in the classroom especially when some students do not engage in his course, he said overall he has received positive reviews from his students.

Carroll currently lives in Virginia with his wife Robin, and he has two grown children.

NEW CLASS!

Tuesday, Oct.

10, 1:30-4:45 p.m., online

We all hold onto stories from prior experiences that can make it hard for us to hear one another, despite our best efforts.

When we loosen the grip, those stuck stories pivot toward self-awareness and a focus on the future, and our attention can match our intention to actively listen.Learning to pivot provides the pathway to open our curiosity and increase understanding in conflict communication.

In a historic first for Montgomery College (MC), three different teams of faculty and administrators have won grant awards from the National Science Foundation (NSF) totaling over $3.24 million.

The grants include EmpowerED: Building the Future Workforce Together, part of the new Enabling Partnerships of Increase Innovation Capacity (EPIIC) program; Beginnings: Democratizing Research and Experiential Education for Microelectronics (DREEM), part of the new Experiential Learning for Emerging and Novel Technologies (ExLENT) program; and AUSEM: Achieving Upward Socio-Economic Mobility, part of the competitive Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics program. Each project begins this month, and will expand opportunities for students who have been traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields.

“These awards are truly transformational–they will provide Montgomery College students with scholarships, internships, research experiences, and mentorship, among other supports,” said Dr.Jermaine F.Williams, president of Montgomery College.”The National Science Foundation is helping our students to unlock their true potential and step on the pathway to meaningful careers.

I am so proud of the MC faculty and staff who have so diligently sought to provide opportunity and equity for our students, particularly those traditionally underrepresented in STEM.”

MC’s EmpowerED award (NSF #2331558) will fund initiatives to strengthen ties between the MC biotechnology program and area and regional employers. The six institutions collaborating on EmpowerED will develop a curriculum focused on industry needs, provide professional development for faculty, and fully prepare students to enter the workforce.

The collaborative is led by Hobart and William Smith Colleges. At MC, project activities include the expansion of industry relationships; establishment of an industry-focused mentoring program; development of a curriculum focused on industry-requested skills; enhanced faculty development through Bio-Trac; and development of a biotechnology theory certificate.Visit the NSF awards page for additional details.

Dr.James Sniezek, instructional dean of Chemical and Biological Sciences, is principal investigator.Drs.Collins Jones and Lori Kelman, professors of biotechnology, are co-principal investigators.MC’s award amount is $400K for the three-year project that began October 1.

The College’s DREEM award (include #2322700) is part of a collaborative led by the University of Maryland (UMD) that also includes the College of Southern Maryland. The DREEM project will engage second-year electrical engineering students in focused workshops at MC to enhance practical design skills, as well as a semester-long research project at UMD to develop laboratory skills.

Students also will participate in paid summer internships with industrial partners. The project will enhance students’ microelectronics skills, and will provide structured support throughout the project lifecycle.

Dr.Palmyra Catravas, professor of engineering, is principal investigator.Dr.Nawal Benmouna, interim instructional dean of Science, Engineering and Technology, and Dr.Lan Xiang, professor of engineering, are co-principal investigators.MC will receive $375K for the three-year project that began October 1.This is the first time that Montgomery College has had an all-woman team submit and lead a STEM project.

Make plans to join us this October 23 through Friday, October 27, 2023, for a celebration of authentic voices and human ingenuity. This is particularly important now as we witness the surge of artificial intelligence and attempts to suppress the voices of various members of society. We invite members of the Montgomery College community across all disciplines and areas to explore the many ways that humans continue to use their innate intelligence to solve problems, innovate, serve, and create.

Visit the Humanities Days Website to view the schedule to register for virtual presentations and plan for in-person events.

Montgomery College is one of more than 70 higher education institutions across the country with a Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) Campus Center, which is an initiative of the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U).MC’s TRHT Campus Center aims to provide community healing activities that promote narrative change in order to dismantle the belief in a hierarchy of human values and to prepare the next generation of leaders to advocate for racial and social justice.MC’s TRHT Campus Center was launched in 2021 with generous support from AAC&U and the Meyer Foundation.

To that end, the TRHT Campus Center is offering Racial Healing Circles during the fall 2023 semester, including two circles in celebration of Humanities Week.To learn more and register, please visit the TRHT Campus Center webpage.

  • Humanities Day Racial Healing Circle, Tuesday, October 24, 2023, 10 to 11:30 a.m., Rockville Campus, Mannakee Building, Room 122, facilitated by Lisa Evans and Sue Haddad
  • Humanities Day Racial Healing Circle, Wednesday, October 25, 2023, 10 a.m.

to noon, Rockville Campus, Mannakee Building, Room 103, facilitated by Clevette Ridguard and Fiona Glade

  • Racial Healing Circle, Monday, November 20, 2023, 9:30 to 11 a.m., Germantown Campus, location TBD, facilitated by Ken Nelson and Stacey Gustavson
  • Additional Racial Healing Circles to be scheduled

What to expect from a Racial Healing Circle:

A group of 10-20 diverse individuals from the College will meet for one and a half to two hours to go through a series of activities that help us get to know each other better. The idea is that if we know each other better as individuals, we break down the hierarchy of who is important and who is not (hierarchy of human value).By knowing each other better, we are better positioned to tackle the important policies, practices, and narratives that are barriers to fulfilling the mission of the College and creating a sense of belonging for everyone.

Mending makes us care more about what we hold dear.As collaborative artist-in-residence at Montgomery College, Charlotte Richardson-Deppe will explore themes of social and environmental justice via sewing and mending practices. She will guide art students in the creation of an interactive soft sculpture installation and multiple-person garments that will result in a performance or happening.Charlotte will also host mending workshops in which students can bring a worn clothing item to repair in way that is both functional and artistic, contributing to a library of creatively mended garments. As they work with found textiles, including their own discarded clothing, students will examine themes of care, sustainability, and consumerism. The final installation will take place in the Sarah Silberman Gallery, Art Building, Montgomery College Rockville Campus.
