Previous Next Jeremy Hunt woos Brexiteers with pledge to scrap Irish Sea trade border The Telegraph 3 hrs ago Edward Malnick © Geoff Pugh for the Telegraph Jeremy Hunt – Geoff Pugh for the Telegraph Jeremy Hunt has been wooing Brexiteer MPs with the pledge that he would remove the Irish Sea border created by the Northern Ireland Protocol.

The former foreign secretary , who campaigned for Remain in the 2016 referendum, has been privately recruiting supporters for a potential leadership campaign.

MPs he has approached include members of the European Research Group of Eurosceptic Tories.

One MP said that Mr Hunt, who came second to Boris Johnson in the 2019 contest, appeared to have “worked out what side his bread is buttered”, given the potential influence of the ERG in a contest if members chose to back one candidate en masse.

While foreign secretary under Theresa May, Mr Hunt warned that the Conservatives would be carrying out “political suicide” if they tried to push through a no-deal exit from the EU, but has consistently emphasised his support for Brexit.

‘Jeremy Hunt is clear the Protocol has to be amended’ A Brexiteer MP said: “Jeremy Hunt is very clear that the Northern Ireland Protocol has to be amended so there are no internal borders in the UK.”

Liz Truss is expected to publish legislation on Monday that would unilaterally override parts of the Protocol , amid an impasse in talks with Brussels, in order to remove checks on goods travelling between Britain and Northern Ireland.

The Foreign Secretary, who is also considered a frontrunner to succeed Mr Johnson, is alleged to have used the opportunity to court the ERG, on whose behalf she is said to have argued for a toughening up of elements of the Bill.

There’s more hard work to come in getting the bill through the Commons and Lords – we’re not complacent at all about that – but are taking it one step at a time.”

Mr Hunt’s pledge that he would at a minimum maintain the Government’s current course of insisting on rewriting the Protocol to alleviate the burdens on Northern Irish firms, appears to have found favour with some Brexiteers.

Mr Hunt has privately indicated that he would seek a negotiated solution with the European Union, which some Tories claim may be more likely to bear fruit under his leadership.

“A lot of it is tonal,” the MP said.”They all hate Boris in the EU but they like Jeremy.”
