Even the most everyday object that is sufficiently decontextualized has the power to take on a new meaning.
We see this, perhaps most famous, in Marcel Duchamp’s “Brunnen”.The so-called finished sculpture was in fact simply a signed urinal. However, in part by separating it from the whole, Duchamp asked his audience to consider the porcelain as art. This naturally brings us to the recently created archive of Mark Zuckerberg’s haircuts.
The archive was created by Sam Lavigne, an artist whose work focuses (among other things) on automation and surveillance.

It consists of 387 machine-learned images of Mark Zuckerberg’s hair.To isolate only the CEO’s mop, Lavigne used an “Open Source Hair Detector” available on GitHub.
“Mark Zuckerberg is one of the richest people in the world,” Lavigne told us on a direct Twitter message.

“He has almost unlimited haircut options – haircuts we can’t even imagine.Still, he chose this haircut. Why?” Just discovered an open source hair detector and used it on hundreds of pictures by Mark Zuckerberg Build what I think is the most comprehensive archive of Zuckerberg hairstyles available. Many thanks to AI researchers! pic.twitter.com/QJqXLAbqyw

Why actually?
The fascination for Zuckerberg’s haircut is not limited to Lavigne.

Indeed, the issue received national attention during a congressional hearing in October.Zuckerberg was reportedly in front of Congress to talk about Facebook’s Libra cryptocurrency project, but California MP Katie Porter noted that Facebook commentators could focus on something else.
“Mr.Zuckerberg, I know that Facebook can sometimes be an unfriendly place, um, both for my personal appearance and apparently for your haircut today,” Porter told the Facebook CEO.”But as a mother of a teenager, I just want to thank you for modeling the acronym.”
Mark Zuckerberg, both his haircut and his general face, has long been a point of interest to the media, the general public, and scholars – the latter best illustrated by the.The magazine was launched in 2017 by Tim Hwang and offers “an academic study of the visual culture of Mark Zuckerberg”.
It challenges the reader to view CEO photos as more than uncomfortable moments captured by an internal photographer or photojournalist. In part, the magazine tries to highlight the contradictions and to find meaning that contains so much of what Zuckerberg does.

One entry, “Sweaty Zuckerberg and Cool Computing”, does this particularly well by causing the CEO’s hoodie and a message printed on the inside that is not visible: “Making the world open and connected”.
The whole thing is absolutely fascinating.
