Over the last 10 years, cryptocurrency, blockchain and art have become the most surprising and unlikely bedfellows.
Street art, graffiti, and memes are quite common, but the words cryptocurrency and fine art rarely occur in the same sentence. But that changes as an artist collides these worlds to create something as unique as a private Bitcoin Wallet key.
Toronto-based artist Nelly Baksht is part of a growing community that creates works specifically for the cryptocurrency and blockchain industry.
However, she was not always interested in decentralized technology.
For Nelly, her love of the arts comes first, but after spending time with friends, she became fascinated with the political power of decentralization, blockchain, and cryptocurrency.
Her blockchain-thematic pieces were showcased throughout the world at specialist conferences, including Malta’s Blockchain Summit and the Blockchain Futurist Conference.

But how does a classically trained artist find his way, combining fine art with visions of cryptocurrency and blockchain? Hard Fork talked to Nelly to find out more. Art comes first
Although she was interested in art early on and conducted an eight-year intensive art program at Youth Art School in her native Russia, Baksht was educated and practiced as a corporate lawyer in her home country for seven years.
Baksht said to Hard Fork, “My passion for art has always been with me. While working as a lawyer, I started studying art at the University of Graphic Design and graduated in 2008.
“After moving to Canada, I happened to come into a community of very talented artists, and I decided to realize my dream and devote myself to fine art.”
For some, it may seem surprising that cryptocurrency and art come together so strongly but for Nelly it seems natural.
“In the modern world, a synthesis / synergy of various human activities leads to the creation of new industries and movements,” said Nelly.
“That’s how Cryptoart came into being ̵ 1; [it’s an] art movement that unites technology and art.
”
In fact, we’ve seen Bitcoin hidden in a street painting, cryptocurrency posters, jewelry and the French even held a “cryptoart” exhibition celebrating 10 years of decentralized currency. Art Cryptocurrency
It is a common rhetoric in the cryptocurrency community that Bitcoin is disrupting ancient financial methods and Blockchain is changing the face of the world as we know it.
This may sound great to the anti-establishment crowd, but the reality of change to an unknown is dangerous and scary to the rest of us. Instead, Nelly wants to create bright and positive parts that are aimed at creating a better world, rather than destroying the old by blending their traditional artistry with their own visions of modern technology.
“My goal was to create something that shows emerging technology in a very positive way, something more creative than destructive,” Nelly told Hard Fork. “I did not aim to create a new style. But the world of Blockchain is very different from the traditional world. And I wanted to combine cutting-edge technology with traditional art techniques.
Finding inspiration
However, as with many creative processes, these works do not always paint themselves. Nelly told Hard Fork that each time it is a different creative process. ” Sometimes it’s a long process with many thoughts on the concept, then composition, too many sketches. I can make many changes compared to the original idea. “She continued,” But sometimes I just understand it and I can. See the full painting – no changes, no changes required.

It’s easier to put a painting on a canvas than at other times, but how does an artist with no prior knowledge or experience with blockchain or cryptocurrency find his way to painting commissions that appeared at congresses and conferences around the world are?
Like many of us, Nelly was interested in Blockchain because of her friends, many of whom work in the computer and information technology industries. It was only a matter of time before Nelly found her way to paint art on cryptocurrency.
“Obviously, many of them have drawn attention to the evolving blockchain technology. Me too. That is, Nelly is reluctant to label her art a “cryptocurrency-based”, instead she looks for the root of the cryptocurrency: “industry cryptography,” but the social implications of blockchain, technology, and decentralization through artistic expression.

“There is a lot of cryptography about the destruction of modern society and the financial system,” she adds. “I want my Cryptoart works to convey another message – [the] The idea of decentralization and blockchain technology has been passed on to humans to transform the whole world into a better place for all of us apocalypsis. ”
But with the current stagnant market and interest in cryptocurrencies being much lower than a few years ago, I was interested in knowing if this affected Nelly and the world of cryptoart. Interestingly, Nelly Hard Fork says she was not affected at all.
“Luckily I do not see a decrease in interest … I accept the market fluctuations philosophically: I am an artist, not a trader and my job is to create and inspire. ”
Perhaps this is a lesson we should all consider, artist or not.
