Microsoft in talks to invest $10 bln in ChatGPT owner -Semafor – Reuters
Jan 9 (Reuters) – Microsoft Corp
(MSFT.O) is in talks to invest $10 billion into OpenAI, the owner of ChatGPT, which will value the San Francisco-based firm at $29 billion, Semafor reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The funding includes other venture firms and deal documents were sent to prospective investors in recent weeks, with the aim to close the round by the end of 2022, the
report said.
Microsoft declined to comment, while OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
This follows a
Wall Street Journal report that said OpenAI was in talks to sell existing shares at a roughly $29 billion valuation, with venture capital firms such as Thrive Capital and Founders Fund buying shares from existing shareholders.
OpenAI, founded by Tesla Inc
(TSLA.O) CEO Elon Musk and investor Sam Altman, made the ChatGPT chatbot available for free public testing on Nov.30.A chatbot is a software application designed to mimic human-like conversation based on user prompts.
The Semafor report said the funding terms included Microsoft getting 75% of OpenAI’s profits until it recoups its initial investment once OpenAI figures out how to make money on ChatGPT and other products like image creation tool Dall-E.
On hitting that threshold, Microsoft would have a 49% stake in OpenAI, with other investors taking another 49% and OpenAI’s nonprofit parent getting 2%, the report said, without clarifying what the stakes would be until Microsoft got its money back.

The hawkish comments on Monday contrast with the dovish signal traders inferred from US government data on Friday that showed employees’ average hourly earnings rose 4.6 per cent year on year on a seasonally adjusted basis in December, compared with 4.8 per cent the previous month, easing upward pressure on inflation.
The world’s biggest economy added 223,000 jobs in the final month of 2022 — more than economists had expected but fewer than the 256,000 increase in November.
Government bonds rallied as a result, with the yield on the two-year Treasury note, which is sensitive to interest rate expectations, falling almost a quarter of a percentage point.On Monday, the yield on the note slipped a further 0.05 percentage points to 4.20 per cent.Bond yields move inversely to prices.

With The Usos in need of new challengers for the undisputed WWE tag team championship, the final hour of Raw on Monday night featured a five-team “Tag Team Turmoil” match.But watching the action in that match wasn’t all The Usos and their Bloodline brother Solo Sikoa got up to on Monday night.
In the end, it was The Judgement Day who emerged victorious in Tag Team Turmoil, defeating each of the four other teams in the match, even when Finn Balor had to be subbed out for Dominik Mysterio heading into the final leg.
CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

This led to Alpha Academy entering as the fourth team in the match.

Otis was trying to finish off Balor with a Vader bomb, but Balor pulled Gable on top of himself.Balor was then “medically disqualified” after being crushed by Otis and Gable, leading Dominik Mysterio to be pulled in as Priest’s new partner.

The Street Profits via pinfall when Dominik Mysterio pinned Montez Ford with a roll-up while his feet were on the ropes.Ford hit a 450 splash on Mysterio, seemingly having the match won when he was pulled out of the ring by Priest.
Ford managed to take out Priest, but Mysterio pulled him back into the ring with a roll-up and put his feet on the middle rope while Rhea Ripley held the feet for the assist.
WWE comedy tends to be far more miss than hit and Dominik Mysterio didn’t exactly set the wrestling world on fire when aligned with his father for the start of his WWE run.Still, maybe the funniest thing on all of WWE programming currently is Mysterio playing up a storyline one-night stint in a local jail as though he is now a hardened criminal who lived through a hellacious prison stint.His getting called up to rescue the team, even as he clearly was not wanting to compete, should only serve to help boost that bit of character work.As opponents for The Usos, The Judgement Day make great sense, having numbers that should be able to help offset the always-present threat of outside interference when facing any members of The Bloodline.
It also didn’t hurt that the action across all four matches was solid and made for a very smooth final hour of the show.Grade: B+

– Kevin Owens def.Baron Corbin via pinfall after a stunner.Owens opened the show with a promo addressing Roman Reigns and The Bloodline when he was interrupted by JBL and Corbin, leading to a match.After Owens’ win, The Bloodline ran in from the crowd and attacked Owens before Owens ran the trio off with a chair.
– An Alexa Bliss promo was interrupted by Uncle Howdy.Bliss called herself “the face of evil”and said she had the whole world in her hands after attacking Bianca Belair on last week’s Raw.
Before she could continue, a video came on featuring clips of her from her time with Bray Wyatt before Uncle Howdy appeared on screen asking, “Do you feel in control?” Howdy then came through the entrance to the ramp but did not walk further.
– Bayley def.Michin via pinfall with a backslide.Bayley scored the cheap pin with her feet on the ropes to end a close match.Damage CTRL would attack Michin backstage later in the show.
– Bobby Lashley returned by attacking Austin Theory.Theory had argued with Seth Rollins, who revealed his knee injury was not serious enough to miss the Royal Rumble.After Rollins left the ring, Lashley’s music hit and he returned for the first time since being “fired” in storyline four weeks prior.
He immediately hit Theory with a spear and threw him from the ring, announcing his intention to win the Rumble.
– Rhea Ripley def.Candice LeRae via pinfall after hitting Riptide.
– Solo Sikoa def.Dolph Ziggler via pinfall with a Samoan Spike.Ziggler had turned down an opportunity to tag with Mustafa Ali in tag team turmoil in favor of attempting to get revenge on Sikoa.

SOUTH AFRICA: The man mauled to death by his own three dogs has been identified as former Zambian national football star Philemon Mulala.
Mulala, 60, was attacked at his home in Lichtenburg, North West, on Saturday.
Provincial police spokesperson Captain Sam Tselanyane said information at their disposal was that Mulala’s wife had been busy on the other side of their house when she heard the dogs barking.
At the time, the area was experiencing load shedding.
“She didn’t bother to go and check what was wrong as their house is situated on a busy street, and the dogs are frequently barking at pedestrians and vehicles passing by,” Tselanyane said.

He added: “Moreover, after electricity was restored, she allegedly went inside the house looking for her husband, but could not find him.
“Upon continuing with the search, the woman saw her husband lying motionless outside in the garden.She then quickly went outside only to find that her husband was bitten by their dogs, two staffie/pit bull crossings and one unknown breed dog.”
Tselanyane said police and Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) had been called, and Mulala was certified dead at the scene.
He said, “The SPCA was also called, and the three dogs were removed from the premises.”
Police have opened an inquest docket.
Mulala also played in South Africa for Cape Town Spurs and Dynamos.
