Addressing a public rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut after laying the foundation stone of Major Dhyan Chand Sports University, he said earlier, only criminals and mafia could play their games in UP and tournaments of illegal land-grabbing used to take place.“After the Rs 700-crore worth university comes up, it will provide international sports facilities to the youth and every year, over a thousand girls and boys will graduate from here.”

He added earlier there used to be tournaments of land-grabbing.“The people of Meerut and adjoining areas can never forget that their homes were burnt. It was because of such sports that people were compelled to leave their own homes and flee to other places. Now the Yogi government is playing jail-jail with such criminals,” said PM Modi .

He then took up the issue of women’s safety saying, five years ago, daughters here were afraid of going out after evening.“Today, they are making the whole country proud,” the PM said.

Taking an apparent jibe at Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, PM Modi added that the role of the government should be that of a guardian.”Capability (yogyata) should be encouraged.

If youngsters commit a mistake, it should not be ignored by saying ‘boys make mistakes (ladhko se galtee ho jaati hai)’.”

Politics apart, he also raised the topic of self-reliant India.“India needs to become self-reliant in sports-equipment manufacturing.”

Also, the PM said priority is being given to sports in the National Education Policy.

“It’s now in the same category as science, mathematics or other subjects.Sports will be a dedicated subject,” said the PM.

The upcoming sports university will be established at Salawa and Kaili villages on the outskirts of Sardhana town in Meerut.

The sports university will be equipped with modern and state-of-the art sports infrastructure, including synthetic hockey ground, besides those of football, basketball, volleyball, handball and kabaddi.

It will also have a lawn tennis court, gymnasium hall, synthetic running stadium, swimming pool, a multipurpose hall and cycling velodrome.

Besides, the university will house facilities for shooting, squash, gymnastics, weightlifting, archery, canoeing and kayaking, among others.

The varsity will have the capacity of training 1,080 sportspersons — 540 females and 540 males.

Before the ceremony, Prime Minister Modi offered prayers at Augurnath temple in Meerut. He was accompanied by Uttar Pradesh governor Anandiben Patel and chief minister Yogi Adityanath.
