imageNagaland CM Neiphiu Rio on Sunday ordered a high-level probe into the reported killings of civilians by security forces in Oting village in the Mon district of the state GUWAHATI: Several villagers of Oting village were killed and many others were injured in Nagaland ’s Mon district on Saturday evening when Assam Rifles personnel on CI operations opened fire on the group returning home from work in a pick-up van.The villagers were daily wage earners working in a coal mine.

Police in Nagaland’s capital Kohima reportedly said at least 13 civilians were killed by security forces and that it is investigating whether the incident was a case of mistaken identity.

The exact number of fatalities, however, is yet to be ascertained as 11 people died on the spot, and several others succumbed to their injuries in hospitals in neighbouring Assam, a police officer said.

Army’s Nagaland-based 3 Corps headquarters in a statement said, “Based on credible intelligence of likely movement of insurgents, a specific op was planned in Tiru, Mon District, Nagaland.The incident and its aftermath is deeply regretted.The cause of the unfortunate loss of lives is being investigated by a court of inquiry at highest level and appropriate action will be taken as per course of law.The security forces have suffered severe injuries in the operation including one soldier who succumbed to his injuries.”

Chief minister Neiphiu Rio has set up an SIT to investigate the unprecedented incident.“The unfortunate incident leading to killing of civilians at Oting, Mon is highly condemnable.Condolences to the bereaved families & speedy recovery of those injured.

High level SIT will investigate & justice delivered as per the law of the land.

Appeal for peace from all sections,” Rio tweeted.

Official sources said defence minister Rajnath Singh and Army Chief Gen MM Naravane have been briefed about the incident.

Sources said that the incident came to light late Saturday night when the unfortunate villagers did not return home at their usual time.Villagers immediately fanned out in search of their members when the bodies were recovered in the pick-up van.

The incident happened when the state is celebrating its biggest festival, Hornbill Festival.On the fourth day of the festival on Sunday Deputy Consul General of Australia Daniel Sim graced the occasion.

Home minister Amit Shah also expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and termed it an unfortunate incident.
