Universal and Blumhouse’s adaptation of The Invisible Man may no longer revolve around the origins of the title character, but the monster of myth is still central to the modern retelling. This time around, the film follow Cecilia (Elisabeth Moss) as she tries to shake off her abusive ex Adrian (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), who has literally become invisible to keep her under his control.
As the trailer makes it evident that none of the events are simply figments of Cecilia’s imagination, the crux of the story is both how she can escape him and why he won’t let her go.In that vein, the lead actors had to have several conversations with director and screenwriter Leigh Whannell to develop their backstory.

Jackson-Cohen shared how some of those conversations went with Screen Rant, during a press event in honor of the film’s February 28 release. After spilling a few stunt secrets, he even deigned to tease his other highly anticipated project – the upcoming sequel to The Haunting of Hill House .
Congratulations on The Invisible Man .You were terrifying even when you were not there.Speaking of which, what is it like embodying a character that so often isn’t there ?
Oliver Jackson-Cohen: Well, it’s quite a bizarre experience.Lizzie and I spent a lot of time talking about the dynamics of Adrian and Cecilia, and we felt – even though the movie is called The Invisible Man, and he is not there – we felt it really important to be very specific about what their relationship was like and what Adrian was like.
And I think that Leigh’s done an incredible job of making him feel that he is this threat throughout the movie. So, it was kind of an amazing experience.

You go and you do your job as an actor, and you do all your backstory, and yeah.It felt like just any other job, really, in that respect.
We also see that it’s not just Celia with whom he has that strange dynamic of control, but also with his brother.

It’s unclear really what was going on between them. What kind of conversations did you have with Michael Dorman?
Oliver Jackson-Cohen: You know what was crazy? We never met.

Michael and I never met; I had to leave to go and shoot what I’m shooting at the moment. And so we never met.

It’s a shame, because he’s so brilliant in the movie.
But, yeah, we actually never spoke about any of it.So, all of that stuff is all him.
How do you guys handle the stunts and choreography of the fight scenes? Are you there on set in the suit?
Oliver Jackson-Cohen: In the crazy green suit? We’re trying to not tell people how we did it, but I was there.Or was I?
The choreography of all the stunts were just insane. The stunt team are incredible, and what Leigh has done camera work-wise to capture those is…

He does this thing, which is done on a count. And so, the cameras are rigged on this – I don’t know what, it’s like a track – and it can move anywhere.

But you pre-program it on a computer, so everything’s done like a dance.
It’s all choreographed, but the camera can move in sort of unnatural ways, because it’s not being handled by cameraman. So, it was incredible to watch.
Clearly, you’re a man of many secrets. One more is The Haunting of Bly Manor .We know that you are thankfully going to be in it.

Is there anything else that you can tell us?
Oliver Jackson-Cohen: No, you know that I’ll get in trouble. You know I’m the worst, because I would. That’s the thing.I feel like I can trust you.
The hard thing is, is The Haunting of Hill House was – this makes me sound like arrogant – such a brilliant show.

I really loved it.It was such an incredible story, what Mike had done.

And so the hard thing was, how’s he going to kind of make a second one and it be equally as brilliant?
And he has, which is just phenomenal. We finished shooting….I left The Invisible Man shoot to go and start on Bly Manor, and it’s quite the story. He’s so clever, Mike Flanagan.More: Storm Reid Invisible Man Interview
