Advisors with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will meet Tuesday to discuss Pfizer ‘s ( PFE ) Covid vaccine in young children.The results could lift Pfizer stock.
X The meeting of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will consider Pfizer and its partner BioNTech’s vaccine for children age 5-11.The two-injection regimen is at one-third the dosage level given to older children and adults.
Debate is likely to center around the risk of myocarditis, heart inflammation that has occurred in some recipients of the messenger RNA vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna ( MRNA ).Boys and young men have a higher risk of the condition.
At Monday’s close, Pfizer stock dipped a fraction to 43.64.Shares are hitting a ceiling at their 50-day moving average , according to MarketSmith.com .

The next step would be to go before the full CDC, which would give final authorization for pediatric vaccines.
Jeff Zients, the White House Covid-19 response coordinator, recently told National Public Radio that the U.S.can expect to see pediatric vaccines “fully up and running the week of Nov.8.”
He said vaccines are being shipped to 20,000 locations around the U.S.But there are an estimated 28 million children between the ages of 5 and 11 in the U.S.
And the White House is starting by pushing out just 15 million vaccine doses.More will follow, according to Zients.
Experts say vaccinating children is a key step in the Covid battle, and could impact Pfizer stock since it may be some time before other vaccine makers can follow suit .The Pfizer-BioNTech shot is already authorized for children 12-15 and fully approved for people age 16 and older.But children age 5-11 are now attending school in person.
The risk of severe Covid in children is lower than in adults.But FDA advisors noted last week that 94 U.S.children in the 5-11 age group have died due to Covid.
Further, infected children are capable of spreading Covid to more vulnerable members of the community.
Pfizer stock rose after the FDA authorized the vaccine last week.
Myocarditis Risk A Key Concern So far, the risk of myocarditis in the younger age group is theoretical.Pfizer has safety information for 3,100 children who’ve received its vaccine.There haven’t been any cases of myocarditis among them.
The vote before the FDA’s advisory committee was a binary one.Panelists could either recommend the vaccine, saying its benefits outweigh its risks for the young age group.Or, it could vote no.Ultimately, 17 out of 18 voted yes, while one panelist abstained.
But the CDC’s advisors and the full agency can narrow the window of eligible children.
During the FDA meeting, the advisors noted about two-thirds of hospitalized children with Covid also have preexisting conditions that already put them at risk.
Further, about 40% of children have naturally contracted Covid.
In Pfizer’s study of the vaccine, the two-dose regimen proved 90.7% protective against Covid in young children.
Pfizer stock remains under pressure, though shares have trended up since mid-October.
