imagePunjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi during a rally in Hoshiarpur on Thursday.TANDA (HOSHIARPUR): Strongly denying any threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ’s life during his visit to Punjab on Wednesday and stating that not even a slogan was hurled at him, chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi has said that PM’s ‘life threat gimmick’ was aimed at toppling a democratically elected state government.

He also took a dig at the PM’s rally, which he could not attend, stating that only empty red chairs were visible and these showed mirror to him about his popularity in Punjab.

Addressing a gathering here after laying foundation stone of several development works worth Rs 18 crore in the constituency, CM Channi asserted that there was no threat to PM’s life and he cancelled his program on Wednesday because he knew that empty chairs would greet him due to thin turn out of people at BJP’s rally.

“Only empty red cheers were visible which showed his unpopularity in the state due to which he went back to national capital citing frivolous reason of security threat. The false pretext on which PM cancelled his visit is a part of larger conspiracy to defame Punjab and murder democracy in the state on lines of what was done earlier in Jammu and Kashmir,” Channi said.

“Yesterday’s gimmick by the PM and his coterie is aimed at imposing President rule in the state. Please stop defaming the state and its people for vested political interests.Slanderous campaign launched by BJP is an insult if all the Punjabis which is unwarranted and undesirable,” he said.

The Chief Minister said that how can the life of PM be threatened if the protestors were more than a kilometre away from him.He said that at the place where cavalcade of PM was stopped not even a slogan was raised against him then how his life was threatened.“Punjabis have sacrificed life for unity, integrity and sovereignty of the country and they can never pose any danger to life and security of PM,” he added.

“PM is a respected leader of nation but it doesn’t behove a leader of his stature to indulging in such cheap theatricals.Thin presence of public in rally has exposed the poor position of BJP in the state which is not going down well to its entire leadership,” he said.

Drawing a comparison, CM Channi said, “Weather was poor yesterday also and is poor today too but there were very few takers for BJP’s rally on Wednesday whereas today’s rally of Congress across state are swelling with people.”

Stating that Punjab could be won only by love and not by pressure, he said Punjabis would vehemently oppose any such move to destabilise democracy in state.

Mentioning the blockade of roads by farmers night before PM’s rally, Channi said that he could not open fire or do lathitcharge at his people. We had managed to persuade them to vacate the roads.

Attacking former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh , Channi said that he was now just a ‘political deadwood’ which was evident from the fact that royal scion of Patiala addressed empty chairs in rally on Wednesday. He said that everyone knew that Amarinder backstabbed Punjab due to which no one wanted to listen to him.“The day is not far when all the candidates of Maharaja will lost their deposits in poll,” he said.

‘Punjabis reject BJP’s divisive agenda’

Later addressing a rally at Dasuya, CM Channi said thet failure of BJP’s rally was a reflection of the fact that Punjabis had outrightly rejected “the divisive and hatred agenda” of BJP.
