Wolf on Wall Street (2013)

Netflix — Sep 12

This instant gem from 2013 has now arrived on Netflix.Wolf on Wallstreet follows Jordan Belfort, a stockbroker on Wallstreet in the late 80s.When the market crashes he teams up with his neighbor to form his own brokerage company.Unbeknownst to their clients, this new firm specializes in pump-and-dump schemes that artificially inflate prices.

This ultimately leaves their buyers with devalued stocks. It doesn’t take long before the FBI gets involved from there. We won’t spoil everything, but if you’ve yet to see it we highly recommend giving it a watch.

Barbie

VOD — Sep 12

Who would have thought that a movie about a line of plastic dolls would go on to be one of the biggest movies of 2023? When Barbie learns that there’s a wider real world outside of her Barbie universe, she finds herself in a bit of an existential crisis. The perfect world she once knew shatters in the process as she wonders if there is a greater place for her in the world beyond what she once knew.

Elemental

Disney Plus — Sep 13

Elemental might not have had much success in theaters but this Pixar movie is absolutely worth a watch.

Set in a city where different elements blend together and yet still keep their distance, a water spirit, and a fire spirit find themselves falling in love. Can they overcome their differences in a world that seems content to distance them? This is a great movie for kids of all ages.

It’s light enough for little ones but has a deeper message even your teenage kids might appreciate.

Loosely

El Conde

Netflix — Sep 15

This satirical horror film is based around Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, who is known for his crimes against his people, as well as his cruelty.

This film takes a unique twist on his life, transforming him into a 250-year-old vampire who lives hidden in a ruined mansion at the very southern tip of the South American continent. The film is set and filmed entirely in Chile.

John Wick: Chapter 4

Starz — Sep 15

The fourth chapter of John Wick is now on Starz! What was new and worth watching over the last month

Looking for more recommendations? Here are other great movies that debuted in the last 30 days or so:

Strays

VOD — Sep 5

From the same minds behind Ted and Sausage Party, Strays isn’t your typical talking dog movie. There’s no happy owner, instead there’s just Doug. The beer-guzzling, abusive jerk wants nothing to do with his dog and ultimately abandons him in the city streets.Reggie vows revenge by teaming up with a pack of strays to get revenge… by literally biting his penis off.

Yeah, this pet movie is certainly NOT for kids.

The Adults

Apple TV Plus — Sep 5

Eric (starring Michael Cera) has a somewhat strained relationship with his sisters, one more so than the other. When a trip brings him back home he plans to stay as short a timeframe as possible, but soon things become more complicated as he reconnects with his sister. All the while, he’s balancing his own addiction to poker and gambling.

The Little Mermaid

Disney Plus — Sep 6

The classic 80s animated film gets a major makeover in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. While most of the story remains the same as the original, there have been some changes that help modernize and expand the story such as giving Prince Eric a deeper back story.

While some decisions like the designs for Schutle and Flounder have been met with mixed reception, overall this is a great film worthy of a watch.

Sitting in Bars with Cake

Amazon Prime Video — Sep 7

Loosely based on the story-based cookbook of Audrey Shulman, Jane is a quiet person with a secret passion for baking. When her best friend encourages her to jump into baking in a big way, she hopes to find true love and confidence in the process.Unfortunately along the way her friend Corinne receives a life-changing diagnosis.Despite the dire situation, the two know they can get through anything together.

Blood Flower

Shudder — Step 8

Those looking for something scarier will want to givve Blood Flower a consideration.Iqbal has a secret gift, or curse, depending on who you ask.

He has supernatural powers, just like his mother before him.The teenager attempts to hide his powers and keep them at bay, but an evil spirit has other plans in this dark and gory thriller.

Snowpiercer (2013)

Netflix — Aug 28

A collaboration between the French graphic novel writer behind the titular series and South Korean-Czech film makers, Snowpiercer has received critical acclaim for its performances, direction, and story. In the not-so-distant future, the few remaining humans on Earth find themselves living in a new ice age as a direct consequence of an experiment designed to stop global warming. Those (un?)lucky enough to have survived this long now live on board a great train designed to plow through the snow and ice that cover the face of the Earth.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)

VOD — Aug 29

Indy is back once more and this time Harrison Ford promises he’s retiring from the role for good.Set in the late 60s, this film follows Indy and his goddaughter Helena as they try to find a powerful artifact before a powerful ex-Nazi finds it first.

While the film hasn’t had the greatest critical response, Indy fans will want to give this one a watch even if only to complain about how the series has gone down hill over the years.Or maybe that’s just me?

Hypnotic (2023)

Peacock — Sep 1

Ben Affleck stars as Danny Rourke, a detective who finds his world turned upside down when his daughter goes missing.Years pass and he gets no closer to learning what really happened. He finally gets the break he needs thanks to an unlikely ally in a gifted psychic played by Diana Cruz. We’ll be honest, this one has a weird and quirky plot and in many ways is a bit of a silly Sci-Fi flick that has more potential than follow-through but it’s still a fun way to spend an hour and a half of your day.

A Day and a Half (2023)

Netflix — Sep 1

In a desperate attempt to get his daughter back, a man invades his wife’s hospital and takes her hostage at gunpoint.

From there he embarks on a road trip with his kidnapped wife all in hopes of getting to his daughter. In hot pursuit is Police Officer Lukas and the entire police force.

Be aware this action drama is a foreign language film set in Sweden so you’ll need to be ready to read a lot of subtitles with this one. This may be a turn-off for some, though honestly, I love a good foreign film myself.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)

VOD— Step 1

The TMNT crew is back in a new Seth Rogen-produced animated film that certainly stands out from what comes before it but in a good way. This one adopts a very unique-looking style and a pretty unique take on shredder as well.In fact, all the characters receive some big personality and character tweaks that help modernize them a bit in this epic retelling. There are also more mutants than ever before. One thing there isn’t? Shredder. For once we see the turtles take on a different kind of villain and the end result is well worth the watch.

In fact, this is easily the best-rated TMNT movie of all time.

Even more impressive, they manage to still have some of that campy charm from the 90s cult classics, but in a way that seems to land a lot better.

Perpetrator (2023)

Shudder —Sep 1

Perpetrator is the story of a girl named Jonny who has a dark family secret, one she didn’t even know about herself. She begins to turn into a dark hunter. When several girls go missing at school, the feral beast Jonny must hunt them down for herself. If you’re looking for something bloody, scary, and with a few plot twists you may just want to give this one a view.

Reinventing Elvis: The 68′ Comeback (2023)

Paramount Plus — Aug 15

This documentary closely examines the King of Rock’s big comeback special in 1968.There are interviews with Elvis experts and everyday folks that attended the special. This is a great look back at one of the best musicians ever to live. After a brief bit in select cinemas, the special has now arrived on Paramount Plus.

Cocaine Bear (2023)

Prime Video — Aug 15

Set in 1985, a drug smuggler’s entire cocaine supply ends up dropping from his plane after a deadly incident. The supply ends up in the forest, where a bear consumes it and becomes an aggressive coked-up monster.

Dee Dee and Henry are two of the potential victims, as they find themselves lost in the woods.Meanwhile, their search party finds itself under attack and more drama unfolds. This no beating around the bush here, this movie is completely absurd, like strange cult classics such as Sharknado before it.Still, if you’re looking for something fun, frantic, and violently absurb you’ll have a great time with this one.

The Pope’s Exorcist (2023)

Netflix — August 16

Back in 1987, Father Gabriele Amorth conducted an exorcism in Italy that led to quite a bit of controversy in the church.
