An Orillia resident recently fell victim to an online fraud, and the OPP are sharing some tips so you don’t find yourself in the same situation.
On April 23, Orillia OPP were contacted by the Manning, Alta., Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) with reports that a person in Orillia was the victim of a fraud.Police say the suspect lives outside Ontario.The suspect allegedly contacted the victim with a story designed to allow them to gain access to the victim’s computer.Once the victim gave the suspect access to their computer, the suspect deposited money into the victims account, although higher than was agreed upon.The suspect then asked for the remaining amount to be sent back.

Weeks later, it turns out there was never any money and the victim was left on the hook.
Orillia OPP shared these tips and red flags to help keep you from being parted from your money:
Do not give credit card or personal information out over the phone, internet or text;
Be wary if someone sends you too much money for an item you have for sale; Be wary if the person who wants to buy your item lives far away;
Be wary if someone offers you something for free or a really good deal;
Be wary if someone requests gift cards or Crypto Currency;
Be wary if they ask you to send money through Western Union;
Or if they contact you through e-mail; and impersonate large companies.
The biggest red flag should be when they ask you for money, credit card information, access to your computer or personal information.

If asked for something you wouldn’t give to a stranger on the street, hang up the phone and call the number provided to you by a verified source.You can also contact www.antifraudcentre.ca or 1-888-495-8501 for assistance.
